Voices for Public Education (Community Members): Innovation status update! According to Kevin Larsen the Douglas County School District is pursuing the assessment waiver through the innovation act in order to utilize local assessments vs state and to create FLEXIBILITY from state mandates. Thanks to the work of many parent activists in Dougco, we have been told that no school pursued the assessment waiver. However, after a cora request to the state, it seems that Kevin Larsen lied. In the documents released Tom McMillen, Director of Student and Parent Choice, is pursuing innovation status through the home school entity Cloverleaf. Under the READ Act, students who are home schooled are not required to take the state and district assessments. (The READ Act impacts preschool up to 3rd grade.) Check this out from the Colorado Department of Education “What kind of test is my child required to take? Who pays for it? Where do I get the test? The student being home schooled must either take a nationally standardized achievement test when he/she reaches grades three, five, seven, nine, and eleven to evaluate academic progress, or a qualified person must evaluate the students academic progress at the parents expense. Contact an organization at Home School Resources, or check with the local school district to see if the student can be tested the same day public school students are tested. The district is not obligated to include home school students and may charge you for any costs incurred. - See more at: cde.state.co.us/choice/homeschool_faq…” Why is the district pushing state testing waivers through Cloverleaf when they have no state testing requirement? Why is the district still secretly pursuing the Innovation status? And what will be happening at the state level during the next legislative session around the Innovation act and what will it mean for public schools in Douglas County?
