Voices from the New American Schoolhouse - an interesting documentary about Fairhaven School. Free Range Kids in a free range school. A fascinating conversation with the students about how they learn by doing - but not so much by sitting and learning in a traditional top down sort of environment. The school is run by democracy - the students have the ability to vote teachers out of their job. (I can think of a certain 5th grade English teacher of mine that would have been voted out of school had it been put to a vote.) Yet, even without traditional scheduled classroom work (in things the student isnt interested in), learning continues to occur. But the learning is driven by the childs individual interests. Each child has a spark of talent, of interest, etc that is enough to drive them to explore further. This drive towards self-education causes them to seek out those who know more about the topic (the teachers), who then help direct them to resources and to explain the concepts in a way that the child can understand. youtu.be/CuAkxww2Jto?list=PL07664D50ED360355
