Volkmar Klein, member of the German Parliament representing the Siegerland (meet him at the the Germanna Foundations Conference and Reunion July 17-20) is photographed working in a Hauberg with the historical society Burbacher Heimatverein. A Hauberg was a sustainable forestry practice in the Siegerland to maximize forest growth to supply charcoal for the iron industry. Here, Volkmar is demonstrating how our ancestors peeled off oak bark to extract tannin for leather manufacture.
