Voluntary Community Action – Ledbury and District has been working in partnership with a group of community volunteers in Wellington Heath to improve an area of land known as Pool Piece. Currently there is no suitable outdoor play area in the village nor is there a place for outdoor activities. Although the land was originally designated as a public open space and children’s play area, it is too steep which makes access, for push chairs, the elderly or disabled difficult. This is compounded in wet weather when it becomes wet and muddy. The nature of the current slope makes games very difficult and there is no easy access to seating. The aim is to create an area which is suitable for a range of community activities as well as a creating a stimulating play area and a place for general seating and relaxation Stage one was to clear the land and cut back the overgrown hedges and stream. As a result light can now penetrate the area and has allowed us to start planting snowdrops, primroses, cowslips, native daffodils and other wild plants and flowers. This will help create a more environmentally attractive area to encourage insects and birds. We have now been fortunate to receive funding from Biffa Award in order to undertake stages 2 - 4. Stage two To reshape the landscape to provide a banked auditorium feature and an area of flat land for play, village games and activities. This will improve access and increase usage. Land drains will be dug to help alleviate flooding. Stage three will be the installation of stimulating play equipment for children as well as pleasant seating for villages and visitors to enjoy. Stage four will involve more planting and tidying of the site. Stage two of the work is anticipated to start week beginning 16th September 2013. The landscaping work will take about 10 working days and we hope the whole project will be completed by Spring 2014. It will be necessary to close Pool Piece for the foreseeable future whilst this work is being carried out and the new turf/seed grows. The emphasis throughout the process has been the preservation of an attractive and natural area. Our thanks go to Biffa Award for funding the project and to those people who have worked so hard to bring the project to fruition. We will post further information and photographs of the work in the near future.
