Volunteer Speakers Needed- January 22, 2015 A Note From A Partner Organization The Medical Society of Virginia (MSV) represents physicians across the commonwealth and advocates at the General Assembly on behalf of its members and their patients. With the 2015 Virginia General Assembly session quickly approaching, MSV is looking for individuals to share their story and input on January 22nd on how prescription prior authorization reform will positively affect them or a loved one. MSV will pursue legislation in January 2015 that includes the following principles: • If a person receiving mental health services is already stabilized on a prescription, he or she will not be required to try a different medication as part of step therapy, even when switching health insurance coverage. • Physicians will be able to override a prior authorization denial when a patient who is being treated for a chronic disease is already stabilized on a particular medication. • A universal form will be developed to be used across all health plans. • All plans must offer the option of electronic submission of prior authorization requests. • Health plans must respond to prior authorization requests within 48 hours, to help speed up the process. • Prior authorization of generic pharmaceuticals will no longer be required. Prescription prior authorization reform will be an extremely challenging legislative undertaking, and much of this initiative depends on both physicians and patients sharing their challenges as well as personally advocating for reforms to their legislators.
