Volunteer Vacancy - Parenting Skills Mentor We are looking for Volunteers as Parent mentors to Mums and Dads with intellectual disabilities. There are approximately 8 positions available. The role involves visiting parents with intellectual disabilities in their homes to help apply the everyday parenting strategies learned at the group sessions in the context of their own home, their own baby and their current parenting needs. The volunteers will help parents apply simple, practical safety strategies and resources to prevent unintentional injuries to their babies. Volunteers will also be available at the group sessions both to take participate in the play sessions and to care for children while their parents are involved in the parenting education sessions. Requirements: Experience raising children and managing a household, have practical skills and knowledge about a range of day-to-day activities. Experience or understanding of working with people with intellectual disabilities would be beneficial. Time commitment: Approximately 2 hours per week for up to six months at one time, starting end of January 2015. Six month commitment required.
