Volunteer Week! The Cody Field Office celebrated the 20th anniversary of National Public Lands Day (NPLD) by hosting a workday at the Seven Mountain River Access of the Shoshone River, located in the outskirts of Cody. The BLM has maintained an access trail leading from a primitive parking area, along a ridge and down a 140’ bluff to the river. The trail winding down the embankment was recently improved through a coordinated effort by the BLM and a local Trout Unlimited group, and the NPLD project built on these improvements. Eleven volunteers, five ranging in age from three to ten years old, assisted the BLM in trail construction and maintenance work, sign posting, and Shoshone River water sampling. The crew worked all day cutting posts, drilling holes into the timbers, and placing them as steps along steep sections of the trail to minimize the steep grade. The steps were then reinforced by pounding pieces of rebar through the timber into the ground. The volunteers also replaced old, shot-up signs along the trail, which proved to be more difficult than expected due to the cobble and river rocks in the ground.
