Volunteers are needed for a new study aimed at reducing stress and anxiety in dogs. The University of Lincoln’s Animal Behaviour Clinic is looking at the new use of an established medicine to help dogs displaying fearful or anxious behaviour. The study is sponsored by Boehringer Ingelheim, one of the world’s leading pharmaceutical companies, and the medication to be trialled is a safe drug currently licensed to control epilepsy and seizures in dogs. In the course of its development, it was reported by owners to have beneficial effects in some of the dogs that also displayed anxiety. To qualify for the study dogs must be generally physically healthy, over six months of age, greater than 5kg in bodyweight and show signs of a fear/anxiety related problem at least twice a week. At this time dogs used for breeding or those with certain medical problems cannot be enrolled. The study will last for a total of three months, during which time owners will be required to fulfil a variety of requirements such as recording their dog’s progress and reporting back every two weeks.
