Vort for your Shabbos Table: Death- Purifies the Soul: The accidental murderers stay in the city of refuge is not only to protect him from the angry family of the murder victim or to punish him for his lack of care; it is like immersion in a Mikveh, says the Meshech Chochmah on this weeks parsho. What is the connection between the death of the Kohen Gadol ( High Priest) and the release of the accidental murderer? The murder, causes impurity, staying in the city of refuge is like the murderer going to the Mikveh. In order for an impure person to eat Trumoh he must firstly go to the Mikveh and also wait for sunset. So too, the murderer staying in the City of Refuge, is like the national sunset of the Kohen Gadol and is the second stage of becoming pure. This week, we buried a number of our Israeli soldiers, killed in the current war in the South of Israel. Death causes impurity; but it also at the same time provides us with the opportunity to become pure afterwards, through re-analysing our values and beliefs and becoming better people.
