Vote Senator Akin Odunsi For Governor An achiever per excellence, Chief Kamar Akinola Babalola Odunsi was born to the illustrious Amodu-Giwa family of Imapa Compound, Otta on July 23, 1945 in Otta, Ogun State. He attended Ansar-Ud-Deen Practising School, Otta where he passed his First School Leaving Certificate (G2) in 1957. He attended CMS Grammar School, Lagos where he was the senior prefect of the school in his last graduating year. He passed his West African School Certificate and the Cambridge Higher Certificate Exams in 1966 and 1968 respectively. Chief Akin Odunsi moved on to the University of Lagos, graduating in 1972 with a B.A (Hons) in Mass Communication. He also bagged an M.S in Advertising from the University of Illinois at Urbana, Champaign in 1973. He began his advertising career in 1973 at Vince Cullers Advertising Inc. Chicago where he had a stint, before returning to Nigeria in 1974 to join Grant Advertising. He transferred his services to Admark Advertising where he rose to become the first Nigerian Chief Executive in 1976. He eventually became the Chief Operating Officer in 1977. His quest for new challenges and success made him co-found Rosabel Advertising in 1978 and was the agency’s Managing Director until 1997 when he became the Executive Chairman, super-intending the growth of the company into a formidable group which today comprises Rosabel Leo Burnett (Ad agency), Starcom Media (Media Independent), Leo Direct (Direct Marketing) and Byte-Size Ltd (A digital media company). Chief Odunsi retired as the Executive Chairman of Rosabel Leo Burnett in 2003 after 30 years of fulfilling career which began in Chicago, United States. He is a trustee of the AAAN and MIPAN. He is currently the Chairman, Board of Directors of Rosabel. The success story of Rosabel and its subsidiaries today, is a further affirmation of Akin’s hard work and his ability to work hand in hand with other people successfully. He is a team player per excellence! There is no doubting the fact that, he has been very active in the Nigerian and indeed, African Advertising scene. He served in several capacities in the Association of Advertising Practitioners of Nigeria (AAPN) and became the Hon. Secretary, 1984 -1987, Vice-President, 1987-1989 and President, 1989-1992. He was pioneer commissioner of the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission (1992-1994); member of the National Committee on the review of Mass Communication policy (2002-2003) and Commissioner, Gateway Games Commission (2005-2006) and a pioneering council member, Advertising Practitioners’ Council of Nigeria. Akin was also was the first Hon. Secretary, Committee of Otta Sons (COCOS); He is a Fellow, Institute of Director (IOD); Fellow, Advertising Practitioners Council of Nigeria (APCON); Members of Ikoyi Club, 1938 and Ikeja Golf Club. A man of several awards and honours, Akin has received the merit award; old Grammarians Society (CMS Grammar School, Lagos – 2003); Iganmode merit award by the Olota of Otta. He is also the Maiyegun of Ilaro; Babalaje of Koko-Atan, Otta; and the Giwa Adinni of Otta Central Mosque, He was also honoured with the Distinguished Alumni Award of the University of Lagos in 1997. Today, Chief Akin Odunsi is a chairman/board member in several companies and is also a council member, Nigeria Conservation Foundation. He has handled several national and international assignments. He has been on Nigeria’s delegation to several national and international assignments. He has been on Nigeria’s delegation to several OAU summits. A devout Muslim, he is also a member, Board of Trustees, Forum for Islamic Education and Welfare and Lekki Muslim Ummah. The emergence of Akin Odunsi into the Nigerian political scene could best be described as a good omen not just for the people of Ogun State but to the nation as a whole looking at the giant strides he achieved in the nation’s advertising industry. As a man who is always poised to face new challenges and has the ability to make success out of them, it is believed that Chief Odunsi’s entrance into the Nigerian politics would help to change the scene for the better.
