While #Muhammed (saaw) was still in Mecca, he decided to expand his call to the tribes outside of the Quraysh, who were visiting during the pilgrimage season that brought the pagan Arab tribes to Mecca. His aim was to invite them to Islam, and (in the same sitting) ask political and military support for the leadership of a new Islamic polity - from a strong tribe capable of providing the military support. With this in mind, and using Abu Bakrs knowledge of genealogy and research at assessing the political and military strength of each tribe, He (saaw) approached a number of tribes. One of the tribes was Banu Amir. He sat with them and invited them to Islam, and then to support his cause by political power (in the same sitting). One of the delegation of the Banu Amir, Bihrah ibn Faris responded By God, If I were to take this man from the Quraysh to my side, I would swallow all the Arabs. If we were to follow you and your message, and support you against your enemies, would we be in command? The Prophet (saaw) answered The command is in the hands of God. He puts it wherever He wills. Bihrah answered Shall we then expose our necks to the Arabs for your sake, and when God leads you to victory, the command will be placed in the hands of others after you? We are in no need of your message! It is interesting Bihrahs response, because though he was a pagan Arab, his response is no different to some Muslims today. When those who seek help and support to re-establish the Islamic polity bequeathed to us from the Prophet (i.e. the Caliphate) request help, some Muslims retort by asking and who will be the Caliph if you are successful? When it is said to them It will be whoever God wills, after we are victorious in re-establishing it [this could be in the form of a Caliph being elected by Shura with the people], these Muslims, like Bihrah respond Shall I risk my life, wealth and time for an enterprise, that might not even yield a leader I like? I am in no need of your call Muslims no longer need to imagine what the Prophet (saaw) went through with the Pagans in history it seems, we are repeating it now. [P.S. It is interesting that the Prophet (saaw) asked the tribe of Banu Amir (and others) to believe his message, AND grant political power to Him and Islam, all in the same sitting! People who try to separate the call to Islam, with the call to its political establishment, please take note….] Of course, there is another parallel to be found for these Muslims. It is with the disobedient followers of Musa (a.s.), who were resistant to fighting the enemies of God: Have you not considered the assembly of the Children of Israel after [the time of] Moses when they said to a prophet of theirs, SEND TO US A KING, AND WE WILL FIGHT IN THE WAY OF ALLAH He said, Would you perhaps refrain from fighting if fighting was prescribed for you? They said, And why should we not fight in the cause of Allah when we have been driven out from our homes and from our children? BUT WHEN FIGHTING WAS PRESCRIBED FOR THEM, THEY TURNED AWAY, except for a few of them. And Allah is Knowing of the wrongdoers. [Quran 2:246] Those who do not learn the lessons of history, are condemned to repeat its mistakes. -Abdullah Al Andalusi-
