W.A.R. – July 6, 2013 Love You’ve heard the song: “All we need is love, love…Love is all we need.” Tina Turner asked a question in one of her songs, “What’s love got to do with it?” Today love is a word that we toss around loosely and love has become distorted in our society. We have been programmed to think that unless I feel a certain way then I can’t love. Love has been reduced to just a mere feeling. So easily we say we love this one and we love that one. But do we truly understand the meaning of the word love or what it is to love? What does the Bible say about love? In Matthew 22:37-40 Jesus tells us that we are to love God with all our heart, soul, and mind and then to love our neighbor as ourselves. He says on these two commandments hang everything else. So obviously loving God and loving others is a priority to Jesus. Jesus demonstrated ultimate love when He gave his life for us so that we could have an intimate relationship with Him. He didn’t die for us because we were so great or we did anything to earn it but simply because He loved us. The kind of love that God demonstrated toward us was unconditional. It’s when we look at Jesus’ example and what He says that we begin to understand that love encompasses more than a feeling but it involves our behavior and actions. It says I love you in spite of certain things. It says I choose to treat you a certain way without expecting anything in return. It is when we learn to love in this way that we are free from how a person responds be it positive or negative. I don’t become a hostage to my emotions. Now that’s deep. In 1 Corinthians 13, the love chapter, the apostle Paul tells us that we can do great things but if we don’t have love, these great acts mean nothing. We can give ourselves, give our time, give our money but the key ingredient is doing it with love. Without love, these things have no meaning, no effect. WOW! Paul also tells us what love looks like and what love is not. So the question we have to ask ourselves over and over again is, “Am I loving others the way Jesus loved?” When people look at our lives, do they experience the love of Christ in and through us? John 15: 11-12 Jesus said… 11 These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full. 12 This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you. Prayer: Lord, help us to love each other like you love us so we can experience the joy that you promised when we do. In Jesus name…Amen.
