Content: A bushfire ADVICE remains for people travelling along Great Northern Highway approximately 20 kilometres east of Broome, and Cape Leveque Road approximately 40 kilometres north of Broome, in the Shire of Broome. • There is no threat to lives or homes but there is a lot of smoke in the area. • Although there is no immediate danger you need to be aware and keep up to date in case the situation changes. • There is a complex of fires burning in the area. • The fires are burning on the eastern side of Cape Leveque Road, and north of Broome Road. BUSHFIRE BEHAVIOUR: • The bushfire is stationary. • It is contained but not under control. • Firefighters are expecting easterly winds to continue in the area. • Smoke is impacting Cape Leveque Road and Great Northern Highway. WHAT TO DO: • Be extremely careful when driving through the area. • Turn your headlights on and drive slowly. • Watch for emergency services personnel and follow their directions. • If you cannot see clearly, pull over, keep your headlights and hazard lights on, and wait until the smoke clears. • If you have a respiratory condition and you have been affected by smoke you should contact your local doctor or call Health Direct on 1800 022 222. ROAD CLOSURES: No roads are closed. Avoid the area and be aware of fire and other emergency services personnel working on site. WHAT FIREFIGHTERS ARE DOING: • Firefighters from DFES and the Perth metropolitan Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service are on the scene. • Firefighters are mopping up and monitoring the fire. EXTRA INFORMATION: • Fires have been burning in the area for several days. • The fires have burnt approximately 700,000 hectares. • The cause of the fires is unknown. • DFES is managing the fires.
