WA Severe Weather Warning for damaging winds for people in the Central West, Lower West, South Coastal, South East Coastal, Great Southern and Central Wheat Belt forecast districts Issued on Friday 26 July 2013. For people in parts of WA southwest of a line from Kalbarri to Southern Cross to Israelite Bay excluding the area southwest of Bunbury to Albany. This includes people in, near or between the following towns: Kalbarri, Northampton, Geraldton, Jurien Bay, Dalwallinu, York, Southern Cross, Narrogin, Katanning, Esperance, Mandurah and the Perth Metropolitan area. The warning for people in areas southwest of Bunbury to Albany has been cancelled. Weather Situation At 5:00am a cold front was located near a line from Geraldton to Albany. The front will move across the remainder of the South West Land Division during the morning. This afternoon a secondary cold front will affect western parts of the South West Land Division. The first front may cause DAMAGING WINDS to 100 kilometres per hour that could result in DAMAGE TO HOMES AND PROPERTY. DAMAGING WINDS are possible in the warning area during the morning. The passage of the secondary front is expected to cause WIDESPREAD DAMAGING WINDS to 100 kilometres per hour that could result in DAMAGE TO HOMES AND PROPERTY over an area west of a line Kalbarri to Dalwallinu to York to Bunbury this afternoon, extending to west of a line Kalbarri to Paynes Find to Hyden to Bunbury by the evening. This system is likely to produce higher sustained winds and more frequent squalls than the first front. Large swells will accompany the secondary front leading to DANGEROUS SURF CONDITIONS which could cause significant beach erosion along the west coast south of Kalbarri. People in the south of WA experience a system as windy as this about 5 times per year. The Department of Fire and Emergency Services advises that people should: If outside find safe shelter away from trees, power lines, storm water drains and streams. Close your curtains and blinds, and stay inside away from windows. Unplug electrical appliances and do not use land line telephones if there is lightning. If boating, swimming or surfing leave the water. Be alert and watch for hazards on the road such as fallen power lines and loose debris. Keep away from flooded drains, rivers, streams and waterways. Be careful of fallen trees, damaged buildings and debris. Be carefull of fallen power lines. They are dangerous and should always be treated as live. Assess your home, car and property for damage. If damage has occurred take photos and contact your insurance company to organise permanent repairs. If your home or property has significant damage, like a badly damaged roof or flooding, call the SES on 132 500.
