#WA #weather #News #Corp SES cleans up after cold front hits Perth and southern Western Australia Monday 23 September 2013 - 11:24 AM More than 100 DFES State Emergency Service (SES) volunteers have helped the community after two cold fronts bringing bad weather crossed the coast this weekend. The SES has received 167 calls for help across the Perth metropolitan area and Mandurah, and the South West and Lower South West regions since the start of the bad weather on Saturday evening. This includes 51 calls in the Perth metroplitan area since 11pm last night. WHAT TO DO: Now the bad weather has passed the SES advises you to: • Keep away from flooded drains, rivers, streams and waterways • Be careful of fallen trees, debris and damaged buildings • Keep clear of fallen powerlines, they are dangerous and should always be treated as live • Check on friends and neighbours to see if they need help • Start cleaning up around your home stack loose material such as branches and debris away from water meters, valves and telephone lines. • If asbestos has been damaged on your property you should seek professional advice before attempting any repairs or clean up because it could be dangerous • If your home has major damage that you cant fix yourself, such as a badly damaged roof or flooding, call the SES on 132 500 • Contact your insurance company or property manager to organise permanent repairs and take photographs as soon as possible for insurance purposes. People are being urged to do what they can to help themselves, if it is safe to do so, before calling the SES for assistance. If driving, take extra care on the roads: • Slow down and keep a safe distance from other drivers • If it is raining heavily and you cannot see, pull over and park with your hazard lights on until the rain clears • Take care in areas that have been flooded and do not drive into water of unknown depth and current • Be careful driving on gravel roads as surfaces will be slippery and muddy, and vehicles could become bogged. INCIDENT INFORMATION: The SES has received 167 calls for help across the metropolitan area since the start of the bad weather on Saturday evening. Maddington and Gosnells were worst hit overnight Saturday. Last night, in Perth the areas most affected included Rockingham, Gosnells and Stirling including structural damage, water damage and roof damage. Since Saturday evening, SES units in Busselton, Bunbury and Augusta-Margaret River responded top 31 calls. Across the State, the majority of calls have involved major structural damage, minor damage to roofs, fallen trees on homes, cars and fences and flooding. SES volunteers have been supported by career Fire and Rescue Service and volunteer Bush Fire Service firefighters. DFES is working closely with WA Police, Western Power and Main Roads to minimise the impact on the community. WEATHER DETAILS: As at 10.20am on 23 September 2013 the Bureau of Meteorology advises the Severe Weather Warning for areas south of a line from Walpole to Northam to Southern Cross to Norseman to Israelite Bay Bay has been cancelled. This includes people in, near, or between the following towns: York, Southern Cross, Narrogin, Katanning, Albany, and Esperance. The cold front has moved eastwards into the Bight. Showers are still expected, but the immediate threat of severe weather has passed. ROAD CLOSURES: A number of roads may be affected by fallen trees and debris including: • Toodyay Road, near Bunning Road, Gidgegannup Further clarification should be sought from WA Police or Main Roads WA on 138 138. INSURANCE: If you have concerns regarding your insurance coverage contact the Insurance Council of Australia on 1300 728 228. This number is not to be used for claims. POWER: Western Power has advised more than 16,000 properties are without power across Western Australia. Most of these outages are in the South West, with very few customers in the Perth metropolitan area losing power during the storm.
