WAAPP To Construct New Rice Laboratory ================================ By Ayodele Deen-Cole The Sierra Leone Agriculture Research Institute (SLARI) is to be furnished with a new rice laboratory under the West Africa Agricultural Productivity Project (WAAPP-SL). This development was disclosed by the Deputy Coordinator of the WAAPP-SL, Sulaiman S. Sesay. When operational, the new SLARI rice laboratory will be used to raise the level of rice production. It will also increase the adoption to new technologies for improvement of rice production in the country. According to the WAAPP-SL, Deputy Coordinator, the construction of the rice laboratory is a component of the WAAPP scheme for Sierra Leone. The project focuses on improving two key local commodities: rice and cassava. Sulaiman S. Sesay disclosed that when constructed, Sierra Leone will serve as the hub for development and improvement of rice productivity, especially raising the annual rice yield in West Africa which is currently low. He added that a similar laboratory has been established in Ghana under the WAAPP scheme, adding that Sierra Leone benefitted from this rice lab because of the country’s significant development in agriculture. Meanwhile, SLARI and WAAPP are also undertaking other activities geared towards improving yields of other local commodities. They are also engaged in fostering development of new ideas and innovations in developing new varieties of other local edible commodities. Phase II of the WAAPP project aims at increasing agricultural productivity and introducing new technologies geared towards improving agricultural productivity.
