WALTER REDONDO Abstract Expressionist works available by appointment at Alexander Salazar Fine Art 619.531.8996 REDONDO I have been creating artworks since I was very young. I am primarily an Abstract Expressionist painter, but my artistic explorations extend to into multiple disciplines, including painting, drawing, sculpture, and functional art. My early paintings were influenced by the work of Robert Motherwell, Willem de Kooning, Cy Twombly, and Joan Mitchell. Over the past 20 years, my own unique style developed, and it continues to expand and evolve as I move forward and explore various creative paths. There is a pure joy contained in my process of discovery and creation that makes time stand still for me, and I believe that this sense of joy is imparted into my paintings and sculptures. In my sculptural work and functional art, I favor the use of ‘found objects’. The idea and process of taking the cast-off items and detritus of the world and repurposing them into artworks fascinates me. I also like the idea that the materials have an aged and organic feel to them, a patina of time, despite the fact that most are manmade objects. In addition, the interest that I have in found objects also extends to the representation and message that they contain for me as a person. Taking these cast-off, disregarded objects that seem to no longer have value, and putting them together in this manner gives them new purpose, interest, and in a way, imparts in them a message of hope and rebirth. These things that seemed lost have become found again. My hope is that each piece may in some way speak its own inner truth to the viewer. Much of my work emanates from an internal dialogue, but some of it comes from my own expression of more overarching themes that I return to again and again. I am interested in the interactions we play out as humans, the struggle for enlightenment, and the search for our place in the world. Water is often a part of my work, whether it be the flowing of rivers, or bridges over it that need to be crossed. Journeys are another metaphor that I use, the movement and interplay of people and cultures. Vessels and boats are also an important theme, because they represent the shared journey on the river of life, people sometimes moving with the flow, other times struggling against the current. Ultimately, I am trying to use art as a tool with which I can create and communicate. I strive to be an agent of positive change, to become changed at the same time, and to continue to grow as a human being. I believe that art can be a tremendous communicative tool because it represents an opportunity for shared visual experience. It speaks to me and to others, and it is a way for us to communicate ideas and experiences. Art can make us feel the entire gamut of human emotion, from joy and elation to sadness, vulnerability and despair. It is a universal language that both influences and inspires, and it touches the hearts and minds of all people. alexandersalazarfineart (7 photos)
