WANSA/ University of Salford Manchester Holds Historic International Conference Date Posted: 07/Sep/2013 Deadline: 15/Jul/2014 West African Nursing Students Association (WANSA) in partnership with University of Salford Manchester United kingdom has held its 2nd international conference at the University of Lagos, Nigeria from 21st to 23rd August 2013 The conference had 320 delegates in attendance, five guest speakers and two special guest of honor and had the theme “Galvanizing leadership potential with professionalism. In his opening remarks the Pioneer Chairman of the Association Ogbolu Collins N. commended the effort of his executives who overcame all obstacles to position themselves as the strongest and goal oriented association in West African Sub region. He also challenged the Students to look within themselves for solutions to the problems in the profession through development of their leadership potentials, active political involvement and also post graduate education in nursing. These according to him would help advance their nursing skills in an evidenced based practice and increase their administrative capability. The chairman of the opening ceremony Mr. Odontre representing the registrar of the nursing and midwifery council of Nigeria commended the outgoing executive for their historic achievements while reassuring the delegates of the councils commitment in ensuring the welfare of graduate nurses especially as regards to nursing internship. Dr. S.O Amaechi (special adviser on health, Imo State government), Prof. Tony Warne (England), Dr. Nancy J Smith (England), Hon. Egwuenu (GNAN President) and Mrs. Shonibare D.O. ( assistant Director of nursing service, Lagos State) were also guest speakers at the conference. Miss Alexandra weightman, Senior recruitment Officer, International Recruitment from salford university , Manchester, United kingdom promised a four thousand pound Scholarship for nursing students with second class upper who intends to study at their university. Decisions and Resolutions: On The effort to raise potential future leaders among nursing students from West African Sub region, the following decisions and resolutions were made. That WANSA Should; • Seek effective commitment of the professional bodies of member countries in ensuring successful achievement of the associations’ objectives. • Create a partnership with an intervention agency that would help the association to network effectively with institutions in the developed countries for better exposures. • Create leadership clubs for Students at all institutions of nursing in West Africa and partner with cooperate bodies for leadership development programs. • Seek for Mentors among political leaders in the society. • Create a parliament with the National presidents of Member Countries as Leaders and Chapter presidents of the universities and nursing Schools as members. At the End of the event, an election was held and the new executives who will take over the administration of the Association for the next two years are as follows.
