WANT TO LEARN SOMETHING TODAY? Lets talk about Bible reading, as well as the order of the Catholic Mass (daily church service): The idea that Catholics dont read their Bibles is incorrect. Well, to an extent: like all churches, there are those who read and study it, and those who do not. But available to all (both Catholic and non-Catholic) are the daily Masses, which include daily readings from the Bible. Below, Ive listed the readings for the month of June, as it will soon be upon us. The Mass is a prayer. Ill outline what happens at Mass by giving an example of what happens today... NOTICE how so much of it comes directly from scripture! Heres what happens: [everyone stands as the Priest enters] ENTRANCE PROCESSION: After the people have assembled, a Gathering Song or Entrance Antiphon is sung or recited as the priest and the ministers enter the church and process to the altar; after reverencing the altar, and sometimes also using incense, they go to their chairs. LITURGICAL GREETING: All together, everyone makes the sign of the cross as the Priest says: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. All respond: Amen. The Priest says: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. All respond: And with your spirit. PENITENTIAL ACT: The Priest says: My brothers and sisters, let us acknowledge our sins, and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries. All respond: I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do, through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault; therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God. The Priest says: May almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life. All respond: Amen. KYRIE: [The following acclamations are sung or recited, either in English or in Greek.] The Priest says: Lord, have mercy. All respond: Lord, have mercy. Priest: Christ, have mercy. All: Christ, have mercy. Priest: Lord, have mercy. All: Lord, have mercy. LITURGY OF THE WORD: First Reading: Lector: A reading from the Acts of the Apostles: Acts 18:1-8 is read. Lector: The Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God! Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 98:1-4 is read [The cantor sings or recites the psalm; the people join in the repeated response.] [then everyone stands, because the Gospel is about to be read] The priest (or cantor) sings: Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! All repeat: Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! GOSPEL READING: The Priest (or deacon) says: The Lord be with you. All: And with your spirit. Priest or Deacon: A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John All: Glory to you, O Lord! [a sign of the cross is made over the mind, lips, and heart, which is asking God to let the gospel be ever on our mind, on our lips, and in our hearts] John 16:16-20 is read After the Gospel Proclamation: Priest or Deacon: The Gospel of the Lord. All: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ! [everyone sits] [The priest (or deacon) then gives his homily (sermon), relating the days readings to our lives in the manner in which he sees fit.] LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST BEGINS: Priest: Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation, for through your goodness we have received the bread we offer you: fruit of the earth and work of human hands, it will become for us the bread of life. All: Blessed be God for ever. Priest: Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation, for through your goodness we have received the wine we offer you: fruit of the vine and work of human hands it will become our spiritual drink. All: Blessed be God for ever. [everyone stands] Priest: Pray, my brothers and sisters, that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God, the almighty Father. All: May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands, for the praise and glory of his name, for our good, and the good of all his holy Church. [The priest sings or says a prayer over the bread and wine, which is different for each Mass. At the end, the people sing or say in response:] All: Amen. Preface Dialogue: Priest: The Lord be with you. All: And with your spirit. Priest: Lift up your hearts. All: We lift them up to the Lord. Priest: Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God. All: It is right and just. Priest: It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks, Lord, holy Father, creator of the world and source of all life. You never abandon the creatures formed by your wisdom, but remain with us and work for our good even now. With mighty hand and outstretched arm you led your people, Israel, through the desert. By the power of the Holy Spirit you guide your pilgrim Church today as it journeys along the paths of time to the eternal joy of your kingdom, through Christ our Lord. Now, with all the angels and saints we praise your glory without end: All: Holy, holy, holy Lord God of hosts, Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. [all kneel] Priest: When we eat this Bread and drink this Cup, we proclaim your death, O Lord, until you come again. Priest: Through him, and with him, and in him, O God, almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours, for ever and ever. All: Amen! [stand] Priest: At the Savior’s command and formed by divine teaching, we dare to say: All: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Priest: Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil, graciously grant peace in our days, that, by the help of your mercy, we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. All: For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Priest: Lord Jesus Christ, who said to your Apostles, Peace I leave you, my peace I give you, look not on our sins, but on the faith of your Church, and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will. Who live and reign for ever and ever. All: Amen. Priest: The Peace of the Lord be with you always. All: And with your spirit. Deacon or Priest: Let us offer each other a sign of peace. [The ministers and all the people exchange an embrace, handshake, wave, give a piece sign, etc.] All: Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world: have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world: have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world: grant us peace. [kneel] Priest [holding up the bread]: Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb. All: Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed. [the priest then gives the body and blood to those who help give it to others, and they then all come down to the ground level and give communion] Priest/Communion Minister: The body of Christ. Individual Communicant: Amen. Communion Minister: The blood of Christ. Communicant: Amen. COMMUNION SONG: [During the reception of Communion, an appropriate song is sung, or at least a short Communion Antiphon is recited.] [as communion is given to others, those who have received it sit in prayer] [stand when all have received communion] Priest: Let us pray. [prayer is said] All: Amen. [announcements are read, if any] [stand] Priest: The Lord be with you. All: And with your spirit. Priest: May almighty God bless you, the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. All: Amen. DISMISSAL: Priest or Deacon: Go in peace, glorifying the Lord by your life. All: Thanks be to God!
