WARM CENTER for our local Homeless referred to Street Residents. I - TopicsExpress

WARM CENTER for our local Homeless referred to Street Residents. I know everyone is concerned about the freezing temperatures we had last night, tonight and tomorrow night. We can use the Salvation Army facility on Palm Ave and Acacia Ave in Hemet. We set this up last year for a few nights and we have a few nights where no Street Residents showed up, most nights were 2-3 and then one night we had 7 show. These people who need warm shelter but are not always up to coming to a facility like this because of trust and because of how they are treated by others on a daily basis. The main thing is the coordinating of volunteers to work 3 different shifts. Last year we had volunteers scheduled to work a shift and never showed and then we had shifts no one was willing to work so I had to pull a couple of all nighters. I have a job and a life so I need help. I do not have time to plan this but I am willing to do this so we can serve those in need. Stacie Olsen of Project Hope will be assisting me in the scheduling of volunteers for these shifts. I will notify everyone via the Pantry FB page that the center will be open and I look at a 5-7 day forcast. Once it is decided the warm center will open we need volunteers and we need to notify all the Street Residents in the valley. They really have no way to know unless word of mouth. Any suggestions are accepted. The requirements to open are 37 degrees or colder then we can open. We currently have 10-12 cots, blankets and plastic tarps at the center. We can always use snacks, drinks and items like new socks, beanies, gloves and blankets. This seems like an easy task but a lot of work and planning goes into this warm center. Salvation Army will open the doors at 8:00pm and then I arrive at 5:30am to get everyone out and then we close the doors. Street Residents cannot come in after 10:00pm and once in they cannot go in and out. Once they go out the door they need to leave for the night. Pets are not allowed in the building and I know this upsets some people but we cannot control what the health department and Salvation Army policies require. We need 3 volunteers for safety and security purposes for 3 different shifts and here are the shift times. Shift #1 8:00pm to 11:30pm, Shift #2 11:30pm to 3:00am, and Shift #3 3:00am to 6:00am. Share this message with everyone you know but one of the keys is to have everyone like our FB page: Valley Community Pantry so all correspondence is better controlled and monitored. It was too hard to go to 5-6 different pages and threads and respond/read all comments. *********************************************It is too late to open tonight but with the weather forecast we can open the next 3 nights - tomorrow night Thursday 1/1/15, Friday 1/2/15 and Saturday 1/3/15. ************************************************************************************We need the entire community to make this happen and remember 9 volunteers per night. Thank you to those who are willing and able to help. God Bless those in need!
