WARNING - rant ahead....Domestic violence is no joke and should never been excused. Its a sad reality for many women and men. Im shocked at how many people do not understand how prevalent it is and how much damage it causes. It doesnt have to be physical. Emotional and verbal abuse can be even more damaging. Bruises heal a lot faster than the emotional damage. Its rare that abuse is a one time event. Abusers use fear, intimidation and guilt to control their victims and many times their family and friends have no idea what goes on behind closed doors. Why dont they just leave? Thats an excellent question...many times its because the abusers has them convinced that it will never happen again. Or that its their fault....if you didnt push my buttons I wouldnt have lost my temper. The victim gradually pulls back the line that separates acceptable behavior from non-acceptable behavior until the line is non-existent. The whole time the victim becomes more and more isolated from friends and family until they are trapped in the situation and have no where to turn.
