WARNING: EXTREMELY GRAPHIC. I dont like posting this stuff, but I feel it is necessary to disabuse people of the myth that slaughter can be performed humanely. Many people continue to eat meat because they think the animal lived a happy life and died relatively painlessly. A captive bolt gun does NOT kill an animal, it only renders them unconscious or stuns them (renders them partially unconscious). Penetrating bolt guns are usually not used due to the possibility of meat contamination with CNS tissue -- which can spread BSE or mad cow disease. Death is caused by the severing of arteries and veins in the neck. I have personally witnessed this and I can tell you that many of the cows are at least somewhat conscious while being bled out.
