WARNING: Graphic content Asalaamu alaikum all, I have been helping out at the Syrian medical clinic close to Babal Hawa, Turkish Syrian border. Emergency causalties in Syria often get transported to emergency clinics in border towns such as Reyhanli. In the few days i was there i have seen some horrendous wounds. Names are withheld due to confidentlity and due to respect for privacy no photos were taken. one case involved a male civilian with an entry wound straight through his left thigh. He had a fracture and had a metal plate implanted. His body however was rejecting the implant. Keeping the wound clean was paramount to prevent further infection. Treatment however involved dragging bethadine soaked swabs straight through his thigh several times. In one end and out the other. This man was in agony. A bag of saline with bethadine was also irrigated through his leg, then packed by stuffing swabs into the wound. On subsequent days he has adamantly refused having anything put into his leg. He will have to have a further operation to remove the metal plate and support his leg using an external fixator device. Another young male civilian, had bilateral leg entry-exit wounds with external fixator on his right leg. His dressings were soiled and 70% of his stiches had opened up. His right inner thigh had a gaping cut that opens, about 22 cm long and 10 cm deep. His left thigh had a similar length cut with a cavity. Despite using lidnocaine, a local anaethetic and eventually intravenous pethidine, the brother was screaming in agony with dhikr. Imagine a cesarean cut that opens and then needs to be cleaned out with bethadine soaked swabs. Another example involves a 14 year child, who the nurses call baby xxxx. He has an external fixator device that stretches from his abdomen (right side) to just above his right knee. His right hip is abnormally shaped due to the repair of his severe injury. he has a stomabag (disection of intestine that is brought out onto the abdomen, and attached to a bag) and is unlikely ever to walk again. Thank you Mr Bashar al-Assad! Photo: the view from the Clinic window. Babal Hawa on the Turkish-Syrian border. The mountains of Syria in the background.
