WARNING: I apologize to any of you who may be offended but once again...this is something we see in rescue every day. These photos are of severe frostbite on a kitten we took in this afternoon. His name is Polar and he is estimated to be between 10 and 12 months old. The unfortunate price this kitten will pay for the lack of responsibility of his previous owner is going to be the loss of all of the toes on both front paws and it very possible his front left leg will need to be amputated. He will likely lose most of the toes on his back paws, his ears are frozen and will fall off soon, and we will not know until after he undergoes his debridement on Monday if he will have a chance at keeping his life. This poor kitten was left to fend for himself out in this brutal cold. We live in a part of the country where -40 below windchill is not a shock. People need to keep their pets indoors or they will suffer like Polar has been suffering for the past couple of weeks. We are going to everything we can to save at least the center pad on his front right paw, but we have been told that he does not look good. We need to be prepared for the possibility that we may not be able to save his paws and if that is the case we would be faced with a very difficult decision. The vet does not think he can manage with the loss of 2 or 3 paws. His paws are VERY infected and we are doing all we can to fight both the infection and try and stop the tissue from dying any further. Please say extra prayers for little Polar. His vet bills are yet to be determined but if we can save him they are likely to soar with the amount of treatment and surgery he will likely require.
