WARNING: I have been receiving a LOT of questions about the new breast density law in CA. The CA law informs the patient of 4 critical facts: 1) that she has dense breast tissue, 2) that dbt makes it harder to evaluate the results of her mammogram, 3) that dbt is a risk factor for developing breast cancer, and 4) advises to discuss screening options with the physician. (from Early Detection For All) YOU MUST PAY ATTENTION TO #4 It is imperative that you discuss screening options with your physician. Do not expect him/her to call you to discuss these options. I have been hesitant in telling you this, but feel compelled. The doctor who knew that I had extremely dbt (8+ years), had a mother with breast cancer, a grandmother with ovarian cancer, did not bear children, am Ashkenazi Jewish, etc. and had PALPABLE LUMPS did not suggest any additional screening aside from annual mammograms. He used poor judgement and was not negligent. He remains in practice in my hometown where he has read thousands and thousands of mammogram reports and may be reading yours right now.
