WARNING: NEW EMAIL SCAM Dear family and friends, Today I just came across a new email scam technique that is more deceptive than previously done. I think most of us have either received or been an unintentional participant in the email scam which often happens with the free email accounts like Yahoo, Google, MSN,etc. Those email providers apparently somehow are vulnerable to scammers somehow getting hold of account holders address books and password. Then they send out an email with a link in the body of the email and unsuspecting recipients see the From email address of someone they know, think it is safe and may click on it. Not sure if this just spam or virus or some scam but it is not good. Anyway, today I got several emails which looked similar to the above, but a bit different having the name of the person whose email address and contacts as it turned out were hijacked –as a signature so it looked a lot more personal and legitimate than the previous ones. So it’s a lot more deceptive. So not saying it is spam/scam in every case-may be a friend sending a link, but beware of this new technique. I received 4-5 of them just today-so is new sneak attack. To play it safe, respond to the email sender (which will again likely be someone you know) hitting not just the Reply button but Reply to All button so other recipients can also be on the alert. Ask the person if they did indeed send it. If they didn’t let them know that their account was hijacked and sending out spam/scam or possibly a virus link. And urge them to reply to all and let everyone know that it is such and they didn’t send. And tell that person whose email account was hijacked to change their password so the scammer can’t use it again. I’m not an expert on this but I believe that is the main thing needed to further protect their account. And you might pass this on and notify others of this new and deceptive tactic.
