WARNING: The following statement, rant or opinion contains ebonic phrasing: Yall sounding like a broken record that needs to be taken off the turntable. All of this talk and pseudo-reviews of the new Funkadelic release, First Ya Gotta Shake The Gate. Either you like it, or you dont. If you are a new fan, you will NEVER get the feeling of what it was like to experience P-Funk and enjoy the not so subtle differences of the two main invasion forces of Parliament and Funkadelic. You (new heads young and old) have the entire catalog to go through at your fingertips while us Funkers from the beginning got our doses as time went on, life changes, etc. We had them as the soundtrack to our lives, you have them as the baddest band in the Universe but youve just discovered it in its entirety. Sure, the album is all over the place, but do you want That same beat up and down? It just wont do. Old heads are coming up with excuses to tell themselves they like it, new heads who dont really overstand the legacy have their preferences also. The fact is, most of the songs have been circulating around the unreleased music collectors for decades, some may have been lost songs but resurfaced at some point in time. The recording of older material mixed with a new digital medium that changes every 6 to 7 months can be taxing on your ears that are used to a certain sound. P-Funk has a very distinctive sound that goes hand in hand with a LEGACY of hits, concepts, art, entertainment and education, all rolled into one. So just remember that when you say this song is cool or that song is weak. Some old heads only liked the hits, Flashlight, Knee Deep, Up For The Down Stroke, etc. Yall wouldnt even listen to the rest of the album. New heads are comparing it to the new sounds they were brought up on, not knowing about certain sounds we (older heads) are familiar with. We think most of the new music is bull$h¡t because we are accustomed to a certain sound frequency than the new heads. As a person deeply involved with sound frequency modulation, some sounds are just not appealing to me but it doesnt mean its not a good song. The songs on the new Funkadelic are all GREAT songs, its just the audio mix is lacking in some areas. Now, I know thats because some songs were recorded over a decade ago, some are new and some are old with new additions to the mix. I can listen to music and not worry about how it is mixed when its a GOOD SONG. All of these are good songs. I have my own filters and mixing board in my head, I listen to songs and adjust everything while listening to it, that takes care of the mix, for me. Most people dont listen to music like that, they want their $h¡t sounding good when they put that mugg on. Back to the point. While I do agree with those who say, Respect The Legacy, we must also respect the new ears. Not to the point of totally changing your direction, but to at least acknowledge what someone likes or dislikes about what you are doing and how it makes them feel. If you change too much, youre forgetting who you are and what attracted people to you and your sound in the first place. From what Ive seen and heard with my own eyes and ears pertaining to how George works is, he soaks up his surrroundings then silly putty molds them into FUNK. He will take all of these great and not so great sounds, put em all together into a groove where you can Get Your Funk On. Remember the Hey Man, Smell My Finger album? That bootleg version that circulated amongst the Funkheads right before the final version came out. The final version ended up being overproduced and too polished for Funkhead ears. This album, I think suffers from Too Many Cooks In The Kitchen. But then again, it shows the many facets of what Funk was, is and will become. Dont sleep on this album like yall did on the non hits, you see what happens to music when you dont embrace it for what it is. Just listen to whats being handed to you now. So, despite what you may have heard, I LOVE THIS ALBUM. And, If you aint SHAKIN THE GATE, then YOU aint FUNKADELIC!!!!!!!!!
