WARNING: This Status is the AMPLIFIED Version (meaning it should probably be a blog) But you should read it, click ..see more and comment :) It is very interesting how peoples true inner perspectives (that sounds deep right? lol) of locs (dreads, dreadlocks, etc) come out when someone who has them, cuts their hair. Reminds me of the song by India Arie - I Am Not My Hair ft Akon . Ive seen/heard extreme notions on both ends of the spectrum, from cutting them implying conformity or selling out to cutting them signifying a rebirth, a new level of professionalism, almost magically taking one to a proverbial next level, more marketable. I could go on and on with my introspection and observation on this topic, I have been reading Blink- Malcom Gladwell (if you are familiar with his writing style maybe you understand why this status is so long, he rubbed off on me) on the snap judgements that the subconscious mind makes, which can turn out to be expert discernment or false stereotypes, based on all of the information the brain has obtained from their environment/upbringing, to media/movie portrayals, to personal experiences. For example why dont you test yourself; when you think dreads (because only people who have them call them locs because we know it is politically correct, everyone else is just HAIRist) what do you associate them with? Athletes? But football players though not olympic divers right? But how impressive would that look seeing someone do 2.5 somersaults and 2.5 twists with no swimming cap on, locs swinging everywhere. Businessmen? But recording artists or promoters though not corporate executives or tech start-ups moving into Silicon Valley Welp, there goes the neighborhood. Lets be clear, I have no quarrel here but if you have followed me this far, I say all that to say this, over the next 6 months I intend to get as many crazy, outlandish, ridiculous, artistic, etc styles with my locs with hopes to add new experiences with people Ive known forever and have never met. I declare war on traditional thinking and vow to add to the gray matter through which you derive your perception of people with locs. But simultaneously I am curious to find out how I am received, this could be the makings of a short YouTube documentary that gets 47 views. (bring in the endorsement deals). At bare minimum I believe that locticians (this is actually a real profession) interested in this project should do my hair for FREE, because if I cut my locs, let the record show that it is because it is so doggone expensive to get my hair did (Please do not refer your cousin kiki who will do it for $25 and washes my hair over the kitchen sink). I gave up the perfect image for the authentic one, which is perfect for me.
