WARNING: This video may be hard to watch due to its graphic nature! Remember the movie about ...we were soldiers once... starring Mel Gibson as LtCol Hal Moore? This video and narrative by reporter Joe Galloway (he was there), tells the story of the 1st battle of the Ia Drang Valley in 1965. This was the first use of helicopters in Vietnam as the key part of the battle strategy. This was also the 1st battle of the war for the 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), which proved the viability of the airmobile concept. I was attached to the Cav in 66/67 and served with several of the survivors. Heroes all! I learned recently that I had served with Col Moore and his unit at Phu Cat while the unit defended the builders of the airfield at the Cat in 66. My job was to provide Combat Air Control working with my Forward Air Controller (FAC) in our USAF Tactical Air Control Party (TACP). My little brush with fame. God bless the men and women that fight to keep our country safe and free!
