WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Department of Justice Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS Office) recently released six awareness briefs available to the law enforcement field, adding to the extensive library of community policing publications and CDs it already offers completely free of charge. These awareness briefs are a series that focuses on how violent domestic and international extremists are using social media to promote their own ideologies and what community policing strategies law enforcement can use to counter these efforts. Each awareness brief details how violent extremists might take advantage of numerous social media platforms to make tracking and monitoring the extent of their online activities difficult. The briefs are organized by topic area based on which social media platform is discussed. The briefs also include key examples and strategies law enforcement can use to counter this violent extremist tactics. All of the resources were developed through cooperative agreements awarded under the Community Policing Development Program.
