The questions and answers do not relate specifically to the ongoing investigation in Annapolis. The editors note states: Many of the factors mentioned in this story can be related to the Child Point fire. It doesnt provide exact answers to the ongoing investigation. But it does give us an inside view of the process the investigators go through while performing investigations. Below is an exert from the report. That fire destroyed a 16,000 square foot home and killed five people, with one still missing. It has garnered National, as well as, International attention. Here locally the questions are mostly the same. Why was the States Attorney involved? Why is this taking so long? If the ATF is there, was there a crime committed? These are all valid questions and made us dig a bit deeper into the Fire Investigative process. To assist our fact finding we contacted two experts in the field of Fire Investigations. Doug Wilson is a well known Fire Investigator in Anne Arundel County. He retired from the Anne Arundel County Fire Department after a long distinguished career. Certified in Fire and Explosive Investigations, Wilson was best known along with his K-9 partner Iris. Doug and Iris, an accelerant sniffing K-9, was used in fires all over Anne Arundel County for many years. Though retired, Wilson still performs investigations in the private sector and was a former member of the National Response Task Force with the ATF. We spoke with Doug about Fire Investigations in general and NOT about the Childs Point fire. Asking many of the same questions our subscribers have. Question #1. Lets start at the beginning - What tasks does the Fire Investigator perform at the scene of a fire? Wilson - Once at the scene of a fire, the investigator usually performs a 360 around the house (referring to a complete walk around the structure). Im looking for mail in the mail boxes, newspapers in the driveway, cars in the garage or driveways, clues that tell me someone was there or not. Im taking pictures of the house as its burning, observing where the origin of fire began. Im going to talk with the fire teams and find out where they saw the most amount of fire when they arrived. While Im doing this, there may be a second investigator to talk to neighbors and ask questions to them. These are just a few of the tasks. Every investigation has different ones. Don and Sandy Pyle lived in the house on Childs Point Road and family members say their four grandchildren were spending the night with them when the fire occurred. Anne Arundel County Fire Officials said five bodies total have been recovered from the site with one occupant still unaccounted for as of Friday. The bodies have been taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for autopsy and identification, fire officials said.
