WASHINGTONVILLE — Montour County District Attorney Rebecca Warren beat out eight competitors to win the VIP miniature horse showmanship contest Thursday night at the Montour-DeLong Community Fair. She and Trigger, a 7-year-old gelding, were awarded the blue ribbon by Judge Joell Arnold who owns a horse farm in the Milton area. “I used to ride horses but I never showed horses,” Warren said. The contestants had to walk a pattern with the miniature horses, donated by Dan and Deb Alpaugh, jog with their horse, stop, back up and walk in a circle in the arena. Montour County Commissioner Jack Gerst won second place with Tucker. Third place went to Pennsylvania Agriculture Department Secretary George Greig and Lucky. State Rep. Kurt Masser was fourth with Apollo. Other places were Montour County Commissioner Trevor Finn with Sassy, fifth; Montour County Commissioner Jerry Ward with Bill, sixth; state Rep. David Millard with Barney, seventh; Columbia County Commissioner Chris Young and Bugs, eighth; and Columbia-Montour Visitors Bureau Executive Director Otto Kurecian and Rexy, ninth. Before the competition, Young told the audience there was a rumor Masser had bought a mini horse and had been practicing the past month at his house. 4-H members gave the VIPs a mini course in showing the horses. Deb Alpaugh, who serves on the fair board of directors, said she came up with the idea of the VIP contest so participants “can see what the kids do” during the fair.
