WATCH BEFORE YOU READ THIS!!! I think this is about the displaced surface area. If you follow along the cut, even though its diagonal, it splits the 4 pieces into two separate blocks when added all together. The surface area of each side of the cut creates a whole block, so essentially now theres a 5th block space where there shouldnt be, allowing for a block to be removed and the pieces to be reoriented. That probably makes no sense but this video makes perfect sense to my brain.
