The feast of the Sun god was adopted and christened to replace the feast of Tabernacles in AD 336.Its adoption sealed the integration of the apostate Christianity and Paganism,and established the Christian liturgy. In 274 AD Aurelian believed that the sun-god had brought him victory in Syria.He set up a state cult to Sol Invictus,the unconquered sun:and announced that the birthday of the sun,a day of special activity,was December 25 (THE CHRISTIANS,page 30). There is no authoritative historical evidence as to the day or month of Christs birth in Jerusalem.25 December was the date of a Roman pagan festival inaugurated in 274 as the birth day of the unconquered sun which at the winter solstice begins again to show an increase in light.Sometime before 336 the Church in Rome,unable to stamp out this pagan festival,spiritualized it as the feast of the nativity of the sun of Righteousness. (Dictionary of The Christian Church,Page 223). This list is dated AD 354.By taking into account some discrepancies in the chronological order,scholars have concluded that there was celebration of Christmas dating back to 336 AD. Christmas is the feast of the birth of Jesus Christ,celebrated on December 25.Despite the Christian birth stories,the church did not observe a festival for the celebration of the event until the 4th century (GROLIER Encyclopedia of Knowledge,Vol.4,page 379.) Sunday became one of the major days in the church calendar after Constantine decided that it was to be a day of civic as well as religious worship.The festival of Christmas became a regular practice in the west about the middle of the fourth century,with the adoption of the December date that had been previously used by the pagans. (CHRISTIANITY THROUGH THE CENTURIES,page 153) During he time of the Roman Empire,for hundreds of years prior to Christianity coming into the mainstream of Western Culture,pagan festivals were celebrated. In the Roman world the Saturnalia (December 17-23) was a time of merrymaking and exchange of gifts.December 25 was also regarded as the birth date of the Iranian mystery god Mithra,the Sun of Righteousness.On the Roman New Year(January 1), houses were decorated with greenery and lights.and gifts were given to children and the poor.To these observances were added the German and Celtic Yule rites when the Teutonic tribes penetrated into Gaul,Britain and Central Europe.Food and goods fellowship,the Yule log and Yule cakes,greenery and fir trees,and gifts and greetings all commemorated different aspects of this festive season (Encyclopedia Britannica).
