WCHE NEWS - Coatesville Area School District Superintendent Dr. Cathy Taschner yesterday joined representatives from state and federal departments in signing a joint action plan to curb discrimination in the district. The action plan seeks to foster equal educational opportunity in Coatesville schools. According to a news release, the plan includes: -Steps to improve communication and transparency among students, parents, educators and community members; -regular training for educators, district and school board personnel in recognizing rights and responsibilities under Pa. non-discrimination laws; -cross-cultural professionalism training for educators and district personnel; -training in issues such as hate crimes, harassment and bullying prevention recognizing trauma as an impediment to performance and demographic change; -surveying students and staff and equity issues, and distributing results to aid in planning future initiatives; -student conflict-resolution and diversity training; and -oversight of district equity initiatives to ensure inclusion of multi-cultural perspectives in curricular and co-curricular programming. Representatives from the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission, U.S. Department of Justice, Center for Safe Schools, and the state NAACP joined Taschner in signing the plan.
