WE ARE DEFINED INDIVIDUALLY BY THE DEEP ROOTS OF OUR HERITAGE, BUT WE ARE ALL IN THE SAME FOREST - M. MILLER These contemporary sculptures focus on variations of personal interpretations of similar social conditions. They conceptually point to thresholds where both pain and pleasure are suggested but not differentiated. The construction of this work represents the exploration of psychological and physical boundaries of the body under the most extreme conditions while recognizing spiritual entitlement. This exhibit carries even more significance as we enter the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. It was created by renown sculptor Marlin Miller, who received national media coverage for his Katrina Sculpture Project. He used reclaimed wood from the storm to build the sculptures. They were textured and shaped by setting them on fire, controlling the damage with wind and water. A SPECIAL THANKS for this years participation in Negrottos Gallery 11th Annual African American Art & Heritage Celebration goes to the man who has brought revival to the Mississippi Gulf Coast. The man whos 10 year labor of love received world wide coverage for Katrinas devastation recovery efforts attracting thousands of visitors to see his sculptures on the beach. He shared his passion for people through his talent and selfless and often exhausting determination to beautify the devastated beach that only the locals can now remember. Thank you, Sculptor Marlin, traveling from Florida to share that love for humanity and the struggles that accompany historys pages during our exhibit brought Negrottos Gallery a richness of emotion. Its your love for humanity that even inspired Kisha Ajose, a world traveler who was moved by your sculptures, to write poetry and travel 6 hours to share it with you!!! Thank you, Rene York Miller for your beautiful spirit that you live with to inspire greatness in your man! :) I know youre the perfect team!!!:)
