WE ARE SO FORTUNATE!!! Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. in early June. “Girl Pool,” the award-winning dance by University of Oregon graduate student choreographer Rachel Winchester, is just one of the pieces that will headline the “Collaborations” concert, a joint performance of the University of Oregon Repertory Dance Company and the high school student dancers of the Crater Renaissance Academy. The concert is scheduled for May 16-17 at 7 p.m. both evenings, in the Crater Performing Arts Center, 655 N. 3rd St, Central Point. Audience members are invited to pay what they can, with tickets available at the door. Winchester’s “Girl Pool,” based on a short story by science fiction author Kurt Vonnegut, was selected by the regional conference of the American College Dance Festival to travel to the organization’s annual meeting in the nation’s capital. The nod to advance to the Kennedy Center is the highest possible honor in adjudicated collegiate dance. The Central Point concert will also include “Letters in the Attic,” a piece by UO Department of Dance chair Jenifer Craig and featuring Crater’s student dancers, as well as Rita J. Honkas “Requisite Resolve” and Walter Kennedys “Solo from The Deep Field.” Besides Winchester’s piece, two other works will feature themes based on the mid-twentieth century era, including Brad Garner’s “Strange…But True,” which is set to country-rock music by Patsy Cline and Johnny Cash; and Shannon Mockli’s “Journey to Wherever,” featuring music “The Girl from Ipanema” and Dean Martin’s “Sway.” The two-night concert is the capstone event of a UO Repertory Dance Company’s residency at Crater, beginning on May 14. As part of the residency, UO faculty and student dancers will work with modern movement classes of Carter Renaissance Academy teacher Matthew Reynolds. In 2014, the UO Department of Dance presented Reynolds with its annual Community Partner Award, to commemorates Reynolds’ ongoing contributions to dance education and outreach in the state of Oregon. This year’s award went to Sarah Beth Byrum, a 1999 UO alumna and dance instructor in the Eugene-Springfield area. The high school residency experience will give UO dance students the opportunity to serve as ambassadors of the UO’s challenging and innovative dance program, and will allow students and community members to interact with performing artists studying in a rigorous college setting. The UO’s annual spring tour kicked off with the UORDC’s annual “at home” concert in early April, then proceeded to North Bend, Ore. for a well-received late April residency with that city’s local school system. Details of the two-night concert are listed below.
