“WE ARE UP TO THE INTERNATIONAL STANDARD IN OUR SECTORAL BUDGETARY ALLOCATION” SAID KANO STATE COMMISSIONER OF BUDGET AND PLANNING The Kano State Commissioner of Budget and Planning, Hon. Yusuf Bello Danbatta said some social development sectors like education, health, water resources, etc got their share to the international benchmark when considered the inter-connectivity those sectors have with other sectors like ministry of works. He made the claim when he featured on our radio program (A KASA A FAIFAI) today (09/06/2013). The claim came as a reaction to some recommendations made by some experts that social sectors like education and health have been under budgeted in the 2013 state budget. He cited an example with the ministry of education when he said, “the fact that we allocated 19% to education as against the 26% UN benchmark, you can see that all constructions in the sector are being financed by the fund of the ministry of works, so you can see that it is not the only 19% that is meant for the sector,” Dabbata said. The commissioner also attributed the consumables shortage faced in the govt hospitals in the state as not the failure of govt to supply enough but as a result of people from the neighboring states coming to enjoy the services of the Kano state govt owned hospitals. On the need to allow the local govts in the state to prepare their budget based on their priorities, Danbatta said it is the local govts that prepare their own budget; the state govt is only playing an advisory role. He commended CITAD and CDD for this enlightenment initiative and promised to cooperate for the achievement of the objectives of the project. A KASA A FAIFAI focuses on how the 2013 Kano state`s budget is being implemented. Its major objective is to enlighten the general public on the need to participate in the Kano State budget formulation and implementation. It comes on Freedom Radio (99.5 FM) every Sunday from 11am-12 noon, and featuring stakeholders on budget matters from different sectors. CITAD and CDD with support from NED are the sponsors of the program.
