WE DON’T DIE, WE KILL OURSELVES (7) It’s so good to be here again. I met our madam in the fields, she was so busy propagating herself that she barely had time for break. Anyway, she made out time for us seeing we are working for the same course. Please, meet Madam . A nut is a fruit composed of a hard shell and a seed, which is generally edible. Nuts are an important source of nutrients for both humans and wildlife. Because nuts generally have a high oil content, they are a highly prized food and energy source. A large number of nuts are edible by humans and used in cooking, eaten raw, sprouted, or roasted as snack or food. Nuts are natures way of showing us that good things come in small packages. These bite-size nutritional powerhouses are packed with heart-healthy fats, protein, vitamins, and minerals. Examples of Nuts includes: Walnuts, Almond, Cashewnuts, Coconut, and Tigernuts. Nuts are useful in promoting better heart health, weight control, and even a lower cancer risk. They are high in polyphenol antioxidants which by binding to lipoproteins would inhibit oxidative processes that lead to atherosclerosis in vivo (hardening of the arteries). In human supplementation studies nuts have been shown to improve the lipid profile, increase endothelial function (endothelia is the thin layer of cells that lines the interior surface of blood vessels and lymphatic vessels) and reduce inflammation without causing weight gain. Nuts especially walnut is a good ‘hair food’ too. This is because walnut contains biotin (vitamin B7) that helps strengthen hair, reduce hair fall and improve hair growth to a certain extent. Researchers looked at the association between nut consumption and risk of pancreatic cancer among 75,680 women in the Nurses’ Health Study with no previous history of cancer. It was observed that the women who consumed a one-ounce serving of nuts two or more times per week had a significantly reduced risk of pancreatic cancer compared to those who largely abstained from nuts. Nuts help to lower cholesterol, contain mono- and polyunsaturated fats known to benefit the heart. The omega-3 fats found in walnuts may protect against irregular heart rhythm. They are rich in arginine, a substance that may improve blood vessel function. Other nutrients in nuts (such as fiber and vitamin E) may also help lower cardiovascular risk. They contain very good levels of vitamin-E, which is a powerful lipid soluble antioxidant. Vitamin E is required for maintaining the integrity of cell membrane, mucus membranes and skin; thus, protecting it from harmful oxygen-free radicals. Nuts nutrition provides many vital B-complex groups of vitamins such as riboflavin, niacin, thiamin, pantothenic acid, vitamin B-6, and folates. These vitamins are essential for optimum health and well-being. Having all these facts about nuts and their health benefits, I would leave you to act on this information. However, which of these nuts suits you best? For me, Walnuts, Coconut, and Cashew nuts are it. Cheers!
