WE HAVE, BUT MAY NOT HAVE. Rom 5:1 Therefore being justified by faith we have peace with God. As we read this, we all come to agree and know it as a fact of our position in Christ. There is peace between God and us. We are no longer objects of wrath. God is not angry with us and at any one time we can approach the throne of grace boldly to obtain mercy and help in time of need! Ah, but is that always our experience. The statement as read in most versions sets our peace with God in the INDICATIVE mood. In other words, it is an ESTABLISHED FACT. Nothing can change this position. We HAVE peace with God. But there are times when we do not FEEL like it. There are times when we shy away from God, thinking that the peace is lost. Perhaps at such times as these, we could read the verse in a SUBJUNCTIVE mood. Therefore being justified by faith LET US HAVE faith with God. There are some manuscripts that actually read like this. The peace with God is now not taken for granted but wished for. There are many Christians who find themselves in a position like this. The peace with God becomes a desire, a wish and not a possession. Dear friends, these situations apply to us over a whole spectrum of our lives as Christians. There is on the one hand what we ARE AND HAVE POSITIONALLY IN CHRIST, pulling in one direction against on the other hand what WE ARE EXPERIENCING IN OURSELVES. When experience and position so unite in harmony, we inherit the kingdom of heaven.
