WE LIVE IN A WORLD OF DOUBLE STANDARDS [My addition: Freedom for a Jewish state to exist by ethnic cleansing Palestinians.] Saed Adel Atshan: 1. Freedom for Charlie Hebdo staff to publish satire mocking Islam (unfortunately we live in a world where they have been killed for this, rest in peace). 2. Freedom for Charlie Hebdo staff to publish satire mocking Islamophobia (many people don’t realize that their latest issue mocked Michel Houellebecq, a French Islamophobe). 3. Freedom for Mustapha Ourrad, a French Muslim, to work as a copy editor for Charlie Hebdo (killed by French Muslim extremists, rest in peace). 4. Freedom for Ahmed Merabet, a French Muslim police officer, to protect the lives of Charlie Hebdo staff (killed by French Muslim extremists, rest in peace). 5. Freedom for Charlie Hebdo staff to publish satire mocking Judaism (they actually fired cartoonist Maurice Sinet for allegedly writing an anti-Semitic column). 6. Freedom for French citizens to lead lives without fear of ISIS and Al-Qaeda attacks in their country (a recent poll revealed that 16% of French citizens sympathize with ISIS). 7. Freedom for the majority French Muslims to lead lives of dignity in France (they continue to face significant racism, discrimination, segregation, and state-sanctioned societal hostility). 8. Freedom for practicing French Muslim women to practice their faith (they continue to be banned from wearing headscarves in public institutions). 9. Freedom for French citizens to organize public solidarity protests for Palestinians (they were banned from doing so during the Gaza massacre perpetrated by the Jewish state this past summer). 10. Freedom for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) to advocate for civil rights for Black Americans without fear of extremist white Christian supremacists (a bomb recently went off outside of their Colorado office and coverage of the tragedy in Paris has eclipsed this). 11. Freedom for Nigerians to live their lives without fear of Islamist extremists (Boko Haram has recently massacred nearly 2,000 people while coverage of the tragedy in Paris has eclipsed this). 12. Freedom for Saudi reform activists to speak (Saudi Arabia, an Islamic state and a US ally, has just publicly flogged Raif Badawi for his Free Saudi Liberals website and was sentenced to 10 years in prison and 1,000 lashes for “insulting Islam.” He will receive 50 lashes per week for 20 weeks. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia sent official condolences to France for the Charlie Hebdo massacre). Freedom for whom? Freedom for all or for some? We live in a world of double standards.
