WE‘LL HINGE PROMOTION OF PRINCIPALS AND TEACHERS ON STUDENTS’ PERFORMANCE-OGSG The Ogun State Government has warned that henceforth, it would tie the promotion of principals and teachers in its public secondary schools to the performance of students in examinations, particularly, the West Africa School Certificate Examination (WASCE) and Basic Education Certificate Examination. Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Barrister Segun Odubela made this known in Abeokuta during a meeting with principals under aegis the of All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPPS) in the State. According to the Commissioner, government is thinking of towing this line because results of candidates who sat for the last May June WAEC examination in the State neither reflected nor justified the huge investments of the government in the education sector. He therefore charged the principals and teachers in public schools to re-double their efforts in teaching so that the policy of the State government on providing free, but qualitative and affordable education programme in the State would record a huge success. The Commissioner assured them of government’s untiring efforts at providing an enabling environment for learning to thrive in all the state public schools, promising that the various challenges being faced by the principals were being addressed. “There is no doubt that you are facing some challenges which are beyond what you can address, but let me assure you that these problems are being addressed and very soon, you will begin to see changes”, Odubela assured. On transfer of students from one school to another, Barrister Odubela said this would be considered for students only in JSS one and two and treated strictly on their merits, adding that such would attract N5,000 and N10,000 respectively for intra and inter state school transfers. Earlier in his remarks, the Special Adviser on Education, Science and Technology, Dr Tunji Abimbola appreciated the school principals for putting in their best despite daunting challenges, advising them to always provide exemplary leadership as they are the central source of authority in their respective schools and environment.
