WEAR A HELMET. 6 weeks ago my horse bolted. She bolted on a road that we had ridden 100 times. She bolted at nothing, there was no rhyme or reason. I put my heels down and pulled my reins hard, I tried to pull her head to one side and she ran through it. We were coming up to a steep hill and she just wasnt stopping. I knew that if we went down that hill at a full tilt gallop, it would be a flurry of hooves, pavement, a 1200 pound animal and my body. I had to make the hardest decision of my life, hold on and risk it or emergency dismount. I threw my right leg to the left side and pushed away from her as hard as I could. Then there was silence. The sound of beating hooves on pavement and my beating heart in my head were gone. I tried to get up, more silence. I knew right away that I was paralyzed. Im writing this from the GF Strong Rehabilitation Centre. I broke my neck when my head hit the ground. I didnt get a scratch on me and not a single other injury. No broken limbs, no bruises, just a broken neck. Im diagnosed as a quadriplegic. In an instant I went from a mom of two, a business owner, a traveller and an equestrian to a woman who will spend the next few months in rehab and (possibly) the rest of my life in a wheelchair. It all changed so fast. However, I still have my mind and Im alive. My helmet saved ME. Without it, this would be a different story. Its not the best outcome but it could have been so much worse. Im still here and Im ready to kick ass and face this challenge head on. Wear the damn helmet. You can follow my recovery at Metamorphosis of Katie
