WEATHER LESSON: Look at todays high temperatures across the Piedmont. Look at who was warmest. Boone?! Typically, going up in the mountains will give you much cooler air. However, today -- the atmosphere was flip-flopped. Cold air stuck at the surface, but warm air well above the surface. We sometimes call this the cold air wedge affect. Cold air moving into the area sinks to the surface, gets stuck here in the Piedmont up against the mountains, and warm air moving in rises up above the cold air on the ground. Since Boone is about 3,000ft above us in the Piedmont -- theyre in the warm air. If you want warm air in the Piedmont today, youd better take a hot air balloon ride up -- and your temperature will warm. Look at the diagram I posted. This shows temps near 36° at the surface, and near 50° 3,000 ft above the surface. This explains why Boone was way warmer than the Triad much of the day.
