WEATHER SUMMARY FOR SOUTHERN OREGON AND NORTHERN - TopicsExpress

WEATHER SUMMARY FOR SOUTHERN OREGON AND NORTHERN CALIFORNIA System number 1 has cleared through the area without doing very much at all. Very light spotty rains for the valleys with light snow in the mountains. Medford recorded a trace of rain out of it. I still have not seen any snowfall amounts greater than a trace for the mountains. In fact, the first system produced more wind than anything else, and wind was not even supposed to be a consideration with it, even yesterday morning. System number 2 is headed inland tonight. For Southern Oregon this one is now looking about the same as number 1 was. Very light spotty precipitation expected here. But, down in Northern California things will be different. The set up there is such that portions of Siskiyou County are going to see a decent snowfall develop tonight into Wednesday morning. This will mostly be in the mountains east of I 5, and down in the Mt. Shasta City to Dunsmuir area, and over to McCloud. It looks like 3 - 5 inches of snow are expected. This has caused the National Weather Service office in Medford to issue a Winter Weather Advisory for the area for tonight into Wednesday morning. It is expected that I 5, Highway 89, and Highway 97 will see impacts from the snow. Chain requirements for these highways in the advisory area may be possible. System 2 will clear through our region by tomorrow afternoon leaving some scattered showers in its wake. I would bet most of the shower activity will be in Northern California. Thursday night will see the third and final system coming for us arriving. This one is going to be much more substantial than the two previous systems. As I said yesterday, this system is far better organized, and it will be making a direct hit on our region. Look for rains at the coast and in the valleys starting Thursday night and then spreading inland. Snow levels are going to be at around 4000 feet again. 3 - 7 inches of snow are expected out of this. I do expect we will see impacts for travel across the Casacdes and into the Siskiyous. Be watching for Winter Weather Advisories to be issued. Once system 3 is through the area we go into a dry spell. The forecasts are now showing more clouds for the valleys, but that looks to be from low clouds and not anything related to weather producing systems. The longer range forecasting now shows us dry out through the 29th of the month. This means that we are not likely to see any storms impacting the area after the next system comes through. With the amount of travelling going on, that is good news. But, it would be nice to see more snow arriving to make it better for winter recreation, and to also get us started on the snowpack we need for water next summer.
