WEATHER SUMMARY FOR SOUTHERN OREGON AND NORTHERN - TopicsExpress

WEATHER SUMMARY FOR SOUTHERN OREGON AND NORTHERN CALIFORNIA Still right on track for the forecasts through the end of next week. We are in our break before the storms coming so benign weather for us for now. Fog did form in Josephine and Douglas Counties this morning. We did see some pockets of fog in Jackson County too. I do expect that the fog will be clearing out of all areas shortly. High clouds are already pushing in over us from the incoming systems. We will see a fair amount of sunshine today though. The big change in the forecasts from Thursday night through Sunday is to push snow levels up. We are clearly going to see the arrival of a Pineapple Express / Atmospheric River event. This is bad news for Mt. Ashland, and horrible news for Mt. Shasta. Snow levels keep pushing up with each run of the data. It is going to be very lucky if we can keep them down at 6000 feet to give Mt. Ashland snow all the way to the Lodge. Most models want to keep that snow level up at around 7000 feet or higher through the event. Just have to hope we get a break on that. Mt. Shasta will have no such luck. It will rain on them and rain hard. Given their situation right now, I expect they will lose all their snow cover, or have very little of it left. In other words.....they will be starting all over again. This also means that their closure is looking to be a lengthy one. Now, do not misunderstand what I am saying. This is NOT the end of the season for either ski area. I do believe in the data and it says we will see the return of snow to the mountains and we will get back to skiing and riding. Just not in the next week or so. The other thing this is bad news for is our snow pack in the mountains to give us water to feed our lakes and rivers through the summer. We are going to see rain, and this will help fill those water ways up. But, for long term and through the summer rain now does little good. It is snow that we need, and we are going to need a lot of it. I still think that is going to happen. But for right now it is not. It will just put us further behind and make it that much tougher to get fully caught up. But, that can happen too. The data is crystal clear about it being stormy through the weekend and into the start of next week. But, next week will see the appearance of a ridge and another break. But, this one is expected to be be brief lasting just a few days. Storms look to return by the end of next week and into the weekend of the 24th and 25th. That is when i expect that we may see the arrival of real help for Mt. Ashland, and Mt. Shasta.
