WEATHER UPDATE: 12:45AM - Latest radar shows mostly moderate and a few heavy bands of snow moving West to East with a very very slight shift to the North. These bands are for the most part, well South of the Gloucester, Camden, and Burlington County borders. Folks in these counties for the most part, have seen a very quiet night. However, Cumberland, Salem, Atlantic, and Cape May Counties have seen and are still seeing these stronger bands of snow. Snow has been falling there consistently since about 6pm. If we look back to Winter Storm Titan on March 3rd, everyone will remember the forecast was for almost 12 of snow when in reality most of us only received 2 to 4. This was caused by inept timing between cold air and precipitation. When cold air is late to the party what happens is that it actually suppresses the moisture that has arrived ahead of it. Thus significantly reducing snow accumulations. Consequently, and I said this earlier, this a very rare occurrence to see. To see it twice in one winter season is extremely rare. But that is mainly what the reasoning is again tonight for all of us closest to Philadelphia. I have also noticed a few dry pockets created from a weakened atmosphere in the West Virginia/Virginia area tonight. This as well adds to lower snow totals. As youll see on the map below, the diagram shows red arrows indicating dry air pushing and holding moisture back from moving more North. The green horizontal line represents the wall where suppression is occurring. Below the line is where we are seeing consistent significant snowfall. Above it, pretty much nothing other than some evidence of Virga (snow that evaporates before hitting the ground). You will also notice an area of moisture circled in Yellow. That is the only area of snow that I expect to maybe still see move East in towns closest to Philly with some accumulating snow. It should be fairly light and will occur sometime between 2am and 8am. Expect snow to fall through daybreak through most of South Jersey. Points most south in NJ will continue to see moderate and heavy bands of snow. Points closer to Philly will see lighter bands and very little accumulation overnight. I am downgrading those sections (Gloucester, Camden, and Burlington Counties) to 1 to 3 total snow accumulations. It is not out of the question either should we not seeing much of anything. I say this as I look at current radar. Radar is showing snow literally dissipating as it crosses over the Delaware River near Philly into NJ. Regarding points more South (Salem, Cumberland, Atlantic, and Cape May Counties), I am confident that my earlier prediction of 5 to 7 of snow will be within range when all is said and done. Should anything change in the next few hours I will update around 3am. Otherwise, have a great evening everyone and be careful driving during the morning commute.
