WEATHER UPDATE 5/24/14 at 3:00 p.m. NWS ISSUES FLASH FLOOD WATCH FOR LARIMER COUNTY FROM NOW UNTIL MIDNIGHT TONIGHT The National Weather Service advising another round of scattered slow moving thunderstorms is expected late this afternoon through this evening across the foothills and over the front range urban corridor. Although most rain amounts will be under 1 inch, a few storms could produce 2 to 3 inches of rain in less than 90 minutes, leading to flash flooding in a few locations. A FLASH FLOOD WATCH means that conditions may develop that lead to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation and you should monitor forecasts and be prepared to take action should flash flood warnings be issued. Remember, TURN AROUND DON’T DROWN when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles. Don’t attempt to cross roads that appear flooded or are covered with water. From the Larimer County Office of Emergency Management: The storm last night produced flash flooding and 1 to 5 inches of rainfall in less than six hours. The hardest hit area was the City of Loveland, but other areas in Fort Collins and Berthoud have also reported problems. The ground has become saturated and run off from snow melt has caused rises in waterways in the foothills and mountains and on the main stem of the Cache la Poudre River from the foothills eastward. NWS has a flood advisory in effect for the Poudre from the foothills into areas just west of Fort Collins. Again, we want to caution everyone that heavy rainfall amounts like we saw yesterday are possible with storms today as they are expected to be slow moving or nearly stationary like the storms we saw last night. We will keep you updated as the day continues. Follow us on Twitter (@Larimersheriff) or stay tuned to our Facebook and updates will be posted here as well.
