WEATHER UPDATE AUGUST4,3014: Rainy in most parts of PHL; typhoon Jose exits Wednesday or Thursday MANILA--Typhoon Jose continues to enhance the southwest monsoon or hanging habagat that will bring rains in most parts of the country on Monday, according to Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA). In an interview, PAGASA weather forecaster Connie Dadivas said that as of 5 a.m., the eye of typhoon Jose was located 850 km east of Casiguran, Aurora (16.3°N, 131.0°E) with maximum sustained winds of 195 kph and gustiness of up to 230 kph. Dadivas said the typhoon, still not directly affecting the country, is not expected to make landfall as no public storm warning signal has been raise in any part of the country. She added the typhoon is forecast to move west northwest at 11 kph but expected to change its movement northward. With its movement, Dadivas said typhoon Jose is expected to be outside the country by Wednesday evening or Thursday morning. However, Dadivas said the typhoon continues to enhance the southwest monsoon -- the prevailing wind system during the rainy season -- and will bring monsoon rains over Ilocos region and Central Luzon which may trigger flashfloods and landslides. She added Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon will have occasional rains while Visayas will be cloudy with light to moderate rainshowers and thunderstorms and the rest of Mindanao will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms. The state weather bureau also issued a gale warning -- strong to gale force winds associated with the southwest monsoon as enhance by typhoon Jose -- that will affect the seaboards of Luzon. “Fishing boats and other small sea crafts are advised not to venture out into the sea while larger sea vessels are alerted against big waves, the agency said. PAGASA also said moderate to strong winds blowing from the southwest will prevail over Luzon and Visayas and coming from the south to southwest over Mindanao. The coastal waters throughout the archipelago will be moderate to rough. (PNA)
