WEDNESDAY • January 21 • 6:00PM Laura Swan The Wisdom of the Beguines: The Forgotten Story of a Medieval Womens Movement (BlueBridge) Bellevue Store Reading & Book Signing The Wisdom of the Beguines: The Forgotten Story of a Medieval Womens Movement By the end of the late 12th century, wars, crusades, plagues, and famine had led to an unusual gender imbalance in Northern Europe. With religious orders so full they had to turn women away, a lay religious movement of single women dedicated to chastity and charity began to form. Known as the Beguines, the women became symbols of self-definition, resourcefulness, and independent religious experience and connection with God. Joining us for a reading and signing of her new book about the movement, local author Laura Swan will share the story of the Beguines and a number of the women who were a part of their widespread community.
