With religious orders so full they had to turn women away, a lay religious movement of single women dedicated to chastity and charity began to form. Known as the Beguines, the women became symbols of self-definition, resourcefulness, and independent religious experience and connection with God. Joining us for a reading and signing of her new book about the movement, local author Laura Swan will share the story of the Beguines and a number of the women who were a part of their widespread community. She is the associate editor of Magistra: A Journal of Womens Spirituality in History and adjunct professor of religious studies at Saint Martins University in Washington State. A member and former prioress of St. Placid Priory, a community of Benedictine women in the Pacific Northwest, her books include The Forgotten Desert Mothers and Engaging Benedict.
